Experts believe awareness amongst the public on good food habits is a dire require. The office-holders of Kerala Hotel and Restaurant Association (KHRA) accentuated that it is the responsibility of the government and the concerned authorities to ensure that cuisines are hygienic and are ready to support the Food and Safety Department to make certain that only healthy food will be served to the public.
Ram Vilas Paswan, Union minister of Consumer Affairs, Food And Public Distribution, while addressing the consumer day celebration said that the government along with voluntary consumer organization will launch a country-wide campaign to create customer awareness for safe and hygienic food. He added that his ministry will try its best to take this initiative to the rural pockets as they need more awareness about customer rights.
Districts like Amritsar, Jalandhar, Muktsar, Mansa, Tarn Taran, Bathinda, Ludhiana, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur and many more have failed to achieve monthly targets for collection of food samples that was set by the department of health because of which food safety seems to remain a low concern for the health department. 1,740 was the target set by the health department out of which only 45% of samples were taken up by the district. Out of these 45%, 31% were unfit for consumption as they failed the test.
Soon to become a national policy, the Food Standards and Safety Authority of India has issued a set of draft nutrition rules on junk food due to the rising obesity-linked diseases among teens. The rules would aim to limit marketing and sale of unhealthy snacks within 50 meters of a school, in lines with similar curbs on tobacco products. As per the draft, private of public schools must have a canteen policy to provide healthy food which is color coded according to its nutritional value.
