The Eco-Sikh organisation recommended all gurdwaras to serve organic langar to support organic food to commemorate the Sikh Environment Day on March 14. Representatives of this organisation will collaborate with farmers to purchase direct organic items to have a positive impact and encourage the community to implement healthy food habits.

The Virginia Department of Health’s Summer Food Service Program seeks local financially stable organizations to offer summer meals to children. Hunger hinders the learning process leading to poor performance once the next academic year begins due to not having nutritious meals in summer. The program will provide nutritious meals to children aged 18 and younger, students over the age of 18 who are challenged and who partake in a vocational program.

Center for science and environment, a Delhi-based green body, will organize a farmers market on the 30th of jan 2016 were attendees will get a chance to learn about natural and healthy food. Their researchers have found unwanted contaminants and substances in human food like antibiotics, pesticides, etc., and hence want to educate people about the same and promote natural and good food.

FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) has amended its regulations for fixing loopholes in the definition of proprietary food, were under the definition several nutraceutical and health supplements have been approved. As per the revised regulation Neutraceuticals and dietary and health supplements such as fortified foods and energy drinks will no longer be considered as proprietary food by FSSAI.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) informed schools affiliated to it to stop consuming and serving junk food within the school premises and to examine whether or not children bring junk food in their lunch boxes. The Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD) committee urged that junk food is replaced by healthy food to curb obesity and other related problems in children and teenagers.

A new study whose findings were published in the journal, Environment Systems and Decisions stated that eating vegetarian food can contribute more to climate change than eating non-vegetarian food. It was observed that eating healthy food that comprised of a mix of fruits, vegetables, dairy and seafood, increased the environmental impact where energy use went up by 38%, water use by 10% and GHG emissions by 6%.

Districts like Amritsar, Jalandhar, Muktsar, Mansa, Tarn Taran, Bathinda, Ludhiana, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur and many more have failed to achieve monthly targets for collection of food samples that was set by the department of health because of which food safety seems to remain a low concern for the health department. 1,740 was the target set by the health department out of which only 45% of samples were taken up by the district. Out of these 45%, 31% were unfit for consumption as they failed the test.

Urban India diagnoses one in seven young pregnant women with gestational diabetes wich was just 1-2% a decade ago. This condition occurs during pregnancy and generally disappears after the delivery of the baby. Dr. Pradeep Gadge said that he treated 1 in 10 women with this condition a decade ago and now the same has gone up to 4 in 10 women. He added that the condition can be due to disrupted sleep cycle and an increase in the age of pregnancy among woman.

Consuming antioxidant supplements has become common due to the busy lifestyles. A recent study by Children’s Research Institute at UT Southwestern researchers has found out that antioxidant supplements may promote malignancy of certain cancer cells. This new study may change the way doctors prescribe antioxidants to their patients. Foods like amla, cinnamon, chillies, turmeric and ginger are good sources of natural antioxidants and should be consumed instead of supplements.
