According to an Amsterdam-based study, what humans see from the outer corner of their eyes is partly an optical illusion which is generated by the brain. The study shows that in certain circumstances the brain automatically “fills in the blanks” in the visual field which is outside the area of direct focus. This conjures the illusion of having as much visual information about the periphery as in the center.
