According to a recent research, short-term sleep can cause serious harm to your heart's function. The study warns that people in medical, fire and emergency jobs, who are forced to work longer shifts are at a higher risk of heart ailments. It states that 24-hour shifts cause a significant increase in cardiac contractility, blood pressure, and heart rate.

As per research it has been proven that short-term sleep deprivation as happens in 24-hour shifts can cause a major increase in cardiac contractility, blood pressure, and heart rate. For this study, Daniel Kuetting from the university of Bonn in Germany recruited 20 healthy radiologists, which included 19 men and one woman, with an average age of 31.6 years. These participants underwent cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging before and after a 24-hour shift, they showed a significant increase in blood pressure and heart rate after short-term sleep deprivation.
